Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how much the people around us shape our lives. We all have values that are important to us—family, integrity, loyalty, kindness, hard work, faith, generosity, or simply treating people the right way. But having those values is one thing. Surrounding yourself with people who genuinely share them is another.
As we get older, I think we become a little more intentional about who we allow into our circle. Not because we don’t care about people, but because we realize that our time, energy, and relationships matter. The people we spend the most time with influence how we think, what we prioritize, and even the kind of person we become.
There is something incredibly refreshing about being around people who share the same core values. You don’t always have to agree on everything, and you certainly don’t have to be exactly alike. But there is an underlying understanding of what matters. You know they will show up when it counts. You know they will celebrate your successes without jealousy, tell you the truth when you need to hear it, and have your back when things get difficult.
I also think it’s important to remember that finding the right people is only half of it. We have to be the kind of person we want in our own circle, too. If we value loyalty, we need to be loyal. If we value kindness, we need to lead with kindness. If we value showing up for people, we need to show up.
Life is too short to constantly question where you stand with the people closest to you. Find the people who bring out the best in you, who share the values that matter most, and who make you feel like you can be completely yourself.
Your circle may change throughout different seasons of life—and that’s okay. Sometimes people grow together, and sometimes they grow apart. What matters is being intentional about the people you choose to keep close.
At the end of the day, a meaningful life isn’t just about what you accomplish. It’s also about who you share it with.
