The First Day Feeling

There’s something about back-to-school season that makes me realize just how quickly time moves.

One minute, summer is stretching out in front of us—slow mornings, late nights, less structure, and kids who somehow manage to eat constantly.

And then, almost overnight, there are backpacks by the door, new shoes waiting to be worn, school supplies scattered across the counter, and calendars filling up again.

As a parent, I have a complicated relationship with this time of year.

Part of me is ready for the routine. There’s something comforting about knowing where everyone needs to be and when they need to be there. But another part of me wants to hit pause for just a little while longer.

Because every first day of school is a little reminder that our kids are growing up.

They’re walking into a new classroom, meeting new teachers, making new friends, learning new things—and taking another small step toward becoming the people they’re meant to be.

And while we spend so much time making sure they have everything they need—the supplies, the schedules, the lunch boxes, the new clothes—I think what they need most is something we can’t put on a school supply list.

They need to know they are loved.

They need to know it’s okay if they don’t have everything figured out.

They need to know that trying matters more than being perfect.

And they need to know that no matter how big the classroom gets, how far they wander, or how independent they become, they will always have someone cheering them on from the sidelines.

So, as we head into another school year, I’m trying to remember not to rush through it.

The early mornings.

The messy backpacks.

The forgotten homework.

The stories at the dinner table.

The proud moments.

The hard days.

The little victories that probably won’t seem little at all someday.

Because these are the years we’ll look back on.

Here’s to fresh notebooks, new beginnings, big dreams, and all the growing that happens in between.

Wishing every student, teacher, and parent a wonderful school year—and hoping we all remember to enjoy the ride a little along the way.
