The One Who Made Me a Dad

Last week, my oldest turned 17.

Seventeen.

I’m not quite sure how that happened. It feels like just yesterday I was holding this little boy who, without even knowing it, was about to change my entire life. He was the one who made me a dad.

And now he’s 17.

Watching your kids grow up has a funny way of making time feel both incredibly slow and unbelievably fast. You spend so many years looking forward to the next stage — the first steps, the first day of school, driving, independence — and then suddenly you find yourself wondering where all those little moments went.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much of parenting is really about learning from our kids.

We spend so much time trying to teach them how to live, how to make good choices, how to work hard and become good people. But if I’m being honest, some of the biggest lessons have come from simply watching them grow.

They remind us to be present. To laugh more. To celebrate the little things. To appreciate a conversation in the car, a family dinner, a random question, or even the moments when they would probably rather not be talking to us at all.

Because the truth is, we don’t get to keep them little.

The seasons change. The house gets quieter. Their world gets bigger. And while we should absolutely be proud of the people they are becoming, there’s something bittersweet about realizing that every stage we pass through is one we’ll never get back.

So as I celebrated 17 years of being a dad last week, I found myself less focused on how quickly the time has gone and more grateful that I’ve gotten to experience it at all.

My son didn’t just grow up over these 17 years.

He grew me up, too.

He made me a dad. He taught me a different kind of love, a different kind of responsibility, and a different way of looking at what really matters.

And maybe that’s the reminder I needed most: Don’t rush through the moments you once wished for.

Be there. Pay attention. Put the phone down. Ask the extra question. Take the picture. Laugh at the story you’ve already heard ten times.

Because one day, you’ll look up and your little boy will be 17.

And you’ll wonder how it happened so fast.
