Last weekend, our family spent the weekend in San Diego for my oldest son’s soccer tournament. Like every parent on the sidelines, I was hoping to watch his team come home with a championship.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the outcome.
But as I watched him compete, something hit me. While the final score wasn’t what we had hoped for, I couldn’t have been more proud of the way he played. He gave everything he had. He never stopped hustling. He encouraged his teammates, stayed positive, and walked off the field with his head held high.
As parents, it’s amazing how your perspective changes over time.
When your kids are little, you celebrate every goal, every point, every ribbon. But somewhere along the way, you realize you’re no longer cheering the loudest for the scoreboard. You’re cheering for something much bigger.
You’re watching for character.
You’re watching to see how they respond when things don’t go their way. Do they quit, or do they keep going? Do they blame others, or do they own their mistakes? Do they encourage the teammate who’s struggling, even when they’re disappointed themselves?
Those are the moments that matter.
The reality is, life isn’t always going to hand us the results we want. There will be missed opportunities, unexpected setbacks, and days when all of our hard work doesn’t produce the outcome we were hoping for.
But if we can walk away knowing we gave our best, treated people well, and kept moving forward, that’s a victory no scoreboard can measure.
Watching my son reminded me that resilience isn’t built through winning every game. It’s built by learning how to lose with grace, get back up, and be ready to compete again.
As parents, that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give our children—not a life free from disappointment, but the confidence that they can face it, learn from it, and keep going.
I’m incredibly proud of the young man my son is becoming. Of course I wanted the trophy. Every parent does. But as we drove home, I realized I had witnessed something even more meaningful.
I watched character being built.
And years from now, I have a feeling that’s what I’ll remember most.
