There’s a golden chair in our family that is more than just a chair. It’s something we hold sacred.
The Golden Chair is a tradition in our family where, when someone sits in it, we get the opportunity to tell them what we love about them. We get to pause, look at that person, and say the things we sometimes think but don’t always take the time to say.
This week, we had the opportunity to put someone in the Golden Chair.
And as we shared what we love and appreciate about this person, I found myself thinking about how powerful that simple tradition really is.
The Golden Chair is sacred in our family—but maybe the goldenness shouldn’t be limited to the chair.
What if we brought a little bit of that Golden Chair into our everyday lives?
What if we told our spouse what we appreciate about them—not just on an anniversary or special occasion? What if we told our kids what makes us proud of them? What if we told a friend, a colleague, or a member of our team the things we admire about them?
We don’t always get the chance to say these things. And sometimes, we assume people already know.
But there’s something incredibly powerful about hearing someone say, “Here’s what I love about you.”
This week reminded me to look for more opportunities to put people in the Golden Chair—even if there isn’t actually a chair involved.
We are grateful for the people who surround us, for the relationships we’ve been given, and for the opportunity to tell people how much they mean to us.
Maybe today, find someone in your life who deserves a little Golden Chair moment—and tell them what you love about them.
