There is something about this time of year that feels unusually full. People call it “Maycember” because it carries the same rushed energy that often comes with December. Calendars fill quickly, responsibilities seem to multiply, and many of us find ourselves trying to close one chapter while preparing for the next.
There are celebrations and deadlines. Exciting milestones and unfinished tasks. Plans being made for summer while the demands of today still need our attention. For many people, it can feel like life is moving at a pace that is difficult to keep up with.
And beyond our own schedules, the world feels loud right now too.
There is always another headline to read, another opinion to absorb, another notification asking for our attention. We are constantly being pulled into what is urgent, what is next, and what feels outside of our control.
It is easy in seasons like this to move through our days on autopilot. To rush from one responsibility to the next and convince ourselves that rest will come later. That peace will come once things settle down.
But life rarely becomes quiet on its own.
Sometimes we have to be intentional about creating that quiet for ourselves.
Lately, I have been thinking about what it means to truly plant your feet where you are. To stop mentally living in tomorrow’s to do list or next month’s plans and instead fully step into the present moment.
To notice the people sitting across from you.
To appreciate ordinary routines that may one day feel like memories.
To pause long enough to recognize that not every demand deserves immediate access to your energy.
To sit in silence long enough to hear your own thoughts again.
Stillness can feel unfamiliar in a world that rewards constant movement. Silence can feel uncomfortable when we are used to filling every empty space with noise. But often, that is exactly where clarity lives.
Sometimes grounding looks like taking a walk without your phone.
Sometimes it looks like turning off the news for the evening.
Sometimes it looks like protecting your calendar from one more unnecessary commitment.
Sometimes it simply means taking a deep breath and reminding yourself that you do not need to carry everything at once.
The world will continue to move quickly. There will always be noise competing for your attention.
But there is something deeply powerful about becoming steady in the middle of it all. About choosing presence over pressure. Peace over chaos. Stillness over constant striving.
If this season feels especially loud, I hope you give yourself permission to slow down.
Plant your feet where you are.
Take in the life happening around you.
Find moments of silence.
There is often peace waiting for us there.
